Don't let the HOA wash away flood mitigation

A rain-proof garden is essentially a flower bed with a designed purpose of being quickly draining.  Rain-proof gardens are a win-win for both the environment and communities in which they are incorporated. A Rain-proof garden serves as a natural filter for stormwater runoff, while preventing pollution in water bodies.  Our home borders both a DHEC Designated “Essential Wetland” and the stormwater runoff for the Ocean Neighbors Community Lake/Retention Pond.  The ecological impacts of a rain-proof garden are highly beneficial due to this location.

Embracing rain-proof gardens means cleaner water, increased biodiversity, and enhanced community resilience to flooding and climate impacts.

Imagine if your gutters caused a flooded, and soggy, unusable yard for you and your neighbor.  Then you get a grant from the City of Charleston for a rain garden. You install it and- NO MORE FLOODING!!!!  Then the HOA Board says they will send in a contractor to remove the garden at your expense if you do not remove it.  Which leaves you forced return to a flooded yard for you and your neighbor.
It sounds illogical but unfortunately that is what has happened.
